GOAL SETTING

The New Year’s resolution that doesn’t last a week? That’s the joke, the shared feeling about our often over-ambitious goals set on the eve of a new year. While the resolution has a bad rap, I do believe in using the start of the new year to think about what we want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Its a time for reflection of the past year - what did I accomplish? What’s next? Am I where I want to be? Where do I want to go? Based on our assessment of the past year, we can think about what we want for ourselves, our family, our careers, and our health in the future. Goal setting is an effective strategy for making sure our efforts are concentrated in the right direction.

Goal setting does a couple of things. It helps you decide exactly what you want to achieve. It helps you separate what’s important from what is distracting along the way. It helps motivation. And achieving the goals you set for yourself builds confidence.

As you think about your goals, keep a few strategies in mind. State your goal as a positive, rather than a negative - “I will get 10 unassisted pull ups,” rather than, “I don’t want to come in last place.” Write your goals down and keep them somewhere you will see them often. Prioritize your goals if you have several. And keep them realistic (this last strategy is what often sets good goal setting apart from those New Year’s resolutions!).

As we approach our Get Fit Challenge (starting January 14th!), we will be encouraging you to set goals for yourself and giving you strategies to achieve those goals. Your coaches are good resources for discussing and setting goals if you need a little direction. At CDR, you have all of the tools for being the best you in 2012!
