Workout of the Day

Do you ever finding yourself craving sugar when you need a little pick-me-up? Check out this article citing new research that suggests a protein snack will give you the energy you need while that sugary snack will leave you wanting a nap.

Orexin is a neuropeptide that regulates a whole array of feelings including sleepiness and hunger. Low levels of orexin activity can make you feel tired and rundown, while high levels of orexin activity can cause feelings of increased energy and the desire for physical activity. New research suggests that the intake of sugar can decrease orexin activity, leading to feelings of sluggishness and less physical activity. On the other hand, protein can increase orexin activity, and motivate physical activity. The benefit of protein intake on orexin levels was even found to negate the orexin-depressing effects of sugar, when protein and sugar are consumed together.

The take away message? Pay attention to how you feel after consuming a sugary snack compared to a snack or meal containing protein. Chances are, you’ll agree that your energy is better after the protein. More energy means more motivation to WOD and better performance!
